As the United states holds a public ceremony commemorating the September 11th attacks, Garris and Somalis living in El Wak remain amidst battle between Islamic militant group Alshabab and Somalia’s Transition Federal Government (TFG) army. Today Alshabab holds up a rigorous fight that reportedly lasted about five hours, in an attempt to take control of the Border town of El Wak from the transitional Somali government.
It is said that over 30 people have died and 23 injured. In Borache El Wak, the death of Garri war hero Abdullahi Gamas is also reported today. An insider says “The attack was not against the Garri people but they happen to be at the wrong place, at the wrong time.” As Alshabab continues its struggle for control in Somalia, Kenyan officials fear for violence to cross borders into Kenya.
